Physical Education & Games

Intent

At Prendergast Ladywell School, we are aware physical activity is under the spotlight now more than ever, it is essential that we can offer the most accessible, engaging, and balanced curriculum which inspires our students by providing new experiences and developing characteristics through the medium of physical activity. It is our vision for every pupil to succeed and achieve their potential as well as to lead physically active lifestyles. We believe by offering the curriculum which we currently do, will enable students to develop a lifelong passion for participating in sport. We strive to inspire our pupils through fun and engaging physical education lessons that are enjoyable, challenging and accessible to all. We want our pupils to appreciate the benefits of a healthy and physically active lifestyle. Through our teaching of PE, we will provide opportunities for pupils to develop characteristics, values and transferrable life skills such as resilience, confidence and respect. Students will also have a better understanding of the technical and tactical aspects of a sport whilst being exposed to KS4 key terminology.

We offer two different pathways in Key Stage 4, Pearson Level 2 BTEC Technical Award in Sport and AQA GCSE PE. This is to ensure our offer meets the needs of our students and sets them up to be successful in later life.

Implementation

Students in KS3 at Prendergast Ladywell School will have two PE lessons per week. Our curriculum is designed to provide students the opportunity to develop both practically and cognitively across a number of different activities. Students are assessed both practically and cognitively through each theme of learning as well as GCSE terminology. At the end of each term, students will receive an overall grade, our assessment model is Heart, Heart, and Hands. Teachers will drip feed GCSE terminology into KS3 lessons to provide the students an opportunity to begin having a better understanding of physical education. There will be opportunities for students to analyse their own performance as well as their peers in lessons, where they will be encouraged to use key terminology in their discussions and answers. As students’ progress through KS3, they have the opportunity to experience various physical activities which allows them to build confidence in their ability whilst also encouraging them to work towards achieving mastery in various activities. Alongside the wide range of physical activities, the schemes of work for each year group have been designed to allow students to develop their individual character and explore key factors underpinning physical activity. Our Key Stage 3 curriculum develop students motor competence, their ability to understand the rules, strategies and tactics of a sport and provide students with an opportunity to participate safely in PE and Sport.

Impact

It is expected that students will have an understanding of the importance of health and fitness, exercising safely and the importance of following rules within sport and society. It is also hoped that students will view their vast experience in PE and sport at Prendergast Ladywell School as a positive one and that this will shape future behaviour.

Students leave school wanting to be physically active, maintaining a lifetime involvement in sport through participation, officiating and/or leadership.

Students gain a lifelong appreciation of the benefits of regular physical activity and sport, enjoyment through involvement, and the development of transferable physical character traits and skills.

Students have the motivation (attitude to learning) to utilise their physical and emotional skills in an independent and effective way in order to live happy and healthy lives.

Learners are required to complete and achieve all three components in the qualifications.
