Mathematics

The Mathematics curriculum promotes the Mastery teaching and learning approach of the curriculum and for some to gain greater depth of proficiency and understanding. Mathematics provides pupils with skills that are essential to be fit and ready for their future. We provide a foundation for understanding maths through problem solving and discovery, developing curiosity, nurturing resilience and fostering enthusiasm for the subject. We aim to develop a culture of deep understanding, confidence and competence in maths – a culture that produces strong, secure learning and real progress. We encourage pupils to calculate effectively, reason mathematically, appreciate mathematical relationships and develop financial literacy.

Students begin to follow a five-year scheme of learning that is aspirational and challenging. The curriculum offers carefully considered sequential learning. Students become fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately that has been coupled with rigorous low stakes formative assessment and summative assessments in order to ensure knowledge is not just encountered but embedded in student’s long term memory.  Students engage in constructing the knowledge for themselves with guided discovery from the teacher. The lessons involve problem-solving, fluency and reasoning aspects, which are proven to be essential skills for students to develop. Within this, students are given strategies to approach problem-solving questions. There are also real-life contextualised questions (including questions on Science, technology, Engineering and Maths, STEM) to help students explore how their mathematical progression will fulfil the Maths vision.

At Prendergast Ladywell our intent is to develop confident mathematicians who develop efficiency,  accuracy and flexibility in the necessary mathematical techniques and procedures that empower them to become resilient and critical thinkers who have access to a wider range of career opportunities, and in most cases higher earnings throughout their career.
